Dam of the Demons

Bhoothathankettu is a dam across Periyar River near Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district of kerala. Nearly two kilometer long trek from the dam site will lead you to a place where huge rock formations block the flow of the river Periyar. There is an interesting story about this.

Demons wanted to destroy the nearby Trikkariyoor temple where Lord Shiva is the deity.Their plan was to create a flood by dumping huge rocks on the riverbed to obstruct the flow of the river. They started their work at night. To hamper their activity, Lord Shiva thought of an idea and made sounds of a rooster crowing. Thinking it was daybreak, the demons ran away without being able to complete the dam.
